Winter weather offers such exercise options as skiing,
snowboarding, and ice skating to get you out of the gym. But after a few months
of the cold, warm and sunny weather is a welcome arrival for exercise
enthusiasts. When winter breaks and it's the first warm, sunny day of spring,
break out of the gym and head outdoors for a workout.
The great outdoors offers many ways to have fun and
exercise. You just have to pick which ones sound best to you. Consider giving
the following fitness activities a try:
Running. If you like to run
but are tired of the indoor track and treadmills, take advantage of the
beautiful warm weather and move your runs outside. Choose a trail, park, or
other running path that's safe, and make sure to wear sturdy running shoes.
Biking. Bicycling is a fun,
low-impact exercise that works the heart and lower body. Always wear a helmet,
pay attention to the road, and make sure to ride a good bike that fits you
well.
Hiking. Many state parks
and other areas offer hiking trails that serve as a nice break from your
regular gym workouts and can provide a good lower-body and cardiovascular
workout. Choose trails that are appropriate for your fitness level and stick to
the path: Don't wander into the woods, where wildlife or poison ivy may be
found. Invest in a pair of good hiking shoes or boots.
Inline skating. Lace up your
skates, head out to a nice, smooth path, and enjoy some inline skating. You'll
get your heart rate up and work your lower body. Remember to wear protective
gear (helmet, knee pads, elbow pads, and wrist guards) to prevent injury in
case you fall.
Swimming. Swimming is a
low-impact exercise that works the whole body and is good for just about
everyone. Check out local public pools or take advantage of nearby beaches or
lakes.
Outdoor Workout Safety
Spring and summer are perfect seasons to enjoy outdoor
sports such as tennis, basketball, golf, football, and soccer; make time for anything
you like to do outside while the weather is nice.
But as the weather heats up, so does your body, and you run
the risk of dehydration, heat exhaustion, and heatstroke. Remember to take the
following precautions:
Stay hydrated. This is one of the
biggest concerns exercisers face, especially in the hot summer months. Dink
plenty of water or a sports drinkbefore and after your workouts, and carry along a
bottle while you exercise.
Keep your cool. When the weather is
really hot, don't plan to do outdoor activities in the middle of the day. Stay
out of the sun during peak hours when it's the hottest; work out early in the
morning or in the evening when the sun has set. Wear light-colored clothing.
Soothe heat cramps. If you
experience muscle cramping during your outdoor workout, stop exercising, gently
stretch the muscles, and drink plenty of cool water.
